My Little Friend
When life was breathed into your tiny little body, you instantly began to give love away. For you, a stranger there would never be. You lived your life well. You loved unconditionally and unselfishly. You never judged or held anyone guilty of past failures or offenses, not once. For you, every day was new, you brought nothing from yesterday, and you never borrowed from tomorrow. Each waking moment was an opportunity for you to shine, for you to give, for you to love. You commanded attention in the simplest of ways, but you never just took it. You taught life lessons, yet you never once spoke a word. If I only had half of what you freely gave away I’d have all of the riches I’d ever need. You protected well those who were left in your charge. You did your job with excellence.
As your days grew shorter and your night’s got longer, you never once stopped being you. Your pace was slower near the end of your journey, but you still navigated well with just a few bumps along the way. When you came to the end you said your goodbyes, not forever, just a little while. You left a still calm, and space you once occupied seems empty. But you are always near because you are in everything.
You’re now free, so run in grassy fields, chase all the bunnies and deer. Dance the dance that only you could. Get reacquainted with your old friends from before; I’m sure you’re already making new ones. You probably woke up and thought all these people are here for me! They are, so enjoy them all. You deserve it. Until forever begins for me, so long my little friend. I’ll think of you often and I’ll love you always.

My best friend laid her little dog to rest this week, and this is for him. He was my dog’s offspring. I’ve known him his whole 18 years and he was a very good boy.
