28 Times: A Study of Ecclesiastes 3 – Intro
To everything, there is a season and a time to every purpose under the heaven. Ecclesiastes 3:1
This is my introduction to a series of posts on Ecclesiastes chapter 3. My plan is to take each verse and break down the 28 different “times” mentioned in this chapter. I did a video on my YouTube channel explaining my plan but I figured I should probably give a brief description here also. I’ve been doing a study on this chapter for myself and decided it would make for an interesting series here. I’m not a theologian by any stretch so this won’t be that kind of study. I’m more or less just going to share my insights, perspective, and hopefully a little encouragement. I personally find so much wisdom in the words of Solomon in Ecclesiastes and I think it would be fun to share that with you.
Time, in general, is often marked by seasons. Currently here in America were finishing up summer and we’ll enter fall (Autumn) in just a few days. Depending on if you live anywhere in this vast country, the physical seasons you experience could vary dramatically in temperature and weather patterns, not to mention how different the weather patterns are in the rest of the world. Here in the south, we are also in hurricane season which runs from June until the end of November crossing over 2 seasons. We’re known for random tornado weather as well and so there often is a time to seek shelter. Down here they say “if you don’t like the weather, wait 5 minutes”.
Metaphorically, it sometimes feels like we’re in a nice comfortable season; life is good, we’re healthy, we have money in the bank, our kids are doing well, etc.. Then the storms of life come, the day to day just gets cold and lonely, or we may feel the heat of stress; whether it be normal life stuff of serious events beyond our control. Whatever the case may be, much of the physical seasons of nature and the seasons of life have many of the same characteristics. Everything has its time in its season.
I believe Solomon’s whole point in this chapter is to address the fact that life happens. There truly is a time assigned to every purpose under the heavens. As hard as things can get there is still probably a purpose in it. We are going to take the next few weeks and months to try and examine what and why that purpose is and hopefully better understand how to deal with life as it happens. Walk through this season with me and let’s see where it leads us.
