The Place I Keep Returning To

I have often wondered why I keep returning to the same place.
Not a physical place, though, there is one.

A park. A quiet lake. A concrete table where the world once became so heavy that even breathing felt like work.
I remember sitting there until the sun disappeared beyond the water.

Not watching a sunset.
Making a decision.
There is a difference.

That evening I wasn’t searching for inspiration. I wasn’t writing a blog post. I wasn’t trying to become an author.
I was simply trying to survive long enough to see another sunrise.

I went home.
That was the decision.
And in many ways, every word I’ve written since has been an extension of that walk back to my car.

People sometimes ask why I write so much about grief.
The answer is simple.
Because grief has been one of my greatest teachers.

I’ve buried parents.
I’ve watched people I love slowly disappear while their bodies remained.

I’ve stood beside hospital beds, funeral homes, quiet cemeteries, and empty houses that somehow still felt full.

Even this week, more names have been added to the list.
Life has a way of reminding us that none of us stays forever.

Some people have suggested that I write too much about loss.
Maybe they’re right.

If all they see is the valley.
What they may not notice is that I have never wanted anyone to stay there.

Grief is my grove.
Hope is the trees I plant there.

Every story I tell, every page I write, every quiet reflection has never been an invitation to remain in pain.

It has been a path through it.

I don’t write because I have all the answers.

Most days I’m still asking the questions.

I still wrestle with God.

I still wonder who I am becoming.

I still have moments when I don’t particularly like the man staring back at me in the mirror.

But I’ve learned to appreciate something else.

The effort.

The choosing.

The quiet decision to get up one more morning.

To forgive one more time.

To love one more person.

To believe that healing is possible even when it arrives so slowly you almost mistake it for standing still.

For years my life felt like scattered pages blowing across an open field.

Regret.

Joy.

Failure.

Faith.

Trauma.

Love.

Questions.

None of them seemed to belong together.

Now I see them differently.

Not as scattered pages,
but as volumes on a shelf.

Some I return to often.

Some I hope never to open again.

Yet every one of them belongs to my story.

Without the darker chapters, I would never have recognized the light.

Without the valleys, I would never have noticed the trees growing there.

I used to think healing meant forgetting.

Now I think it means finally having the courage to remember without losing yourself.

I don’t know how much time I have left.
None of us does.

I don’t know if anyone will remember my name fifty years from now.

That isn’t really what I’m chasing anymore.

If something I’ve written helps one exhausted soul take one more deep breath…

If one person sitting alone on a park bench decides to go home instead…

If one grieving heart believes that tomorrow might still be worth seeing…

Then these words have already lived a life far greater than my own.

I don’t need to be famous.

I don’t need to be celebrated.

I simply want to leave behind enough hope that someone else finds the strength to keep walking.

Because once upon a time…

A tired man sat beside a quiet lake.

He watched the sun disappear.

Then he stood up.

And he chose to breathe~
