Change
Change happens everyday. No two days are ever the same. We have seasons of change every year: winter, spring, summer and fall.
In winter, it’s cold. There’s a barrenness to the outside. Life turns inward to places of comfort and warmth, holiday traditions and movies by a fire. We hibernate as we desperately wait for the warmth of spring to rescue us.
Spring comes, and brings us hope of new beginnings. It also brings with it new life, colors so bright it hurts the eye, and smells of flowers and freshly cut grass.
We transition into summer with heat, heat and more heat. And here in the south humidity so thick you feel like you’re melting. But with the heat comes sunshine, plenty of sunshine and vitamin d, which is quite healthy. It’s shorts and flip flops and sun tans and beaches.
Then we have fall, where the leaves lose their color and fall to the ground. The air has a crispness and the temperature begins to cool. Festivals and corn mazes open up, and folks begin to prepare for the holidays. Football starts, and fans begin the months long journey of losing their minds (me included).
Then we circle back to where we started, and do it all over again.
The natural seasons are our timepiece to tomorrow. We know by the changes we experience what season we’re in. Sometimes seasons of life are measured much the same. For instance much like spring, when a baby is born we have new life, that fresh baby smell, and all the joy that comes with having a new addition to our family. And like the winter, when we lose someone we love, we feel empty and barren, life is cold and days are long as we wait for the warmth of life to fill us back up.
Life is shifting. As I sit here writing this, I realize just how much. People are coming, people are going. Jobs are changing, dreams are becoming. Hearts are full, hearts are breaking. Lives are evolving, and lives are growing.
I’m not sure what season this is, but as hard as it seems to be I have hope. Hope that life will turn out how it does when I dream.
With every season, there is good and bad. We all have our favorites and our views may differ based on our preference. But I truly believe life happens as it should; that good prevails, dreams really do come true, and when it’s done, life ends with my feet in the sand, the sun on my face, and my heart overflowing with more love than it can possibly hold.
This is just what I needed.
