Things I’d Like To See
What’s something you’d love to see in the future, but know you probably won’t live to witness?
There are a lot of things I’d love to see.
I’d love to see diseases like Alzheimer’s, cancer, heart disease, and diabetes become footnotes in history.
I’d love to see people stop judging one another long enough to realize we’re all carrying something heavy.
I’d love to see a world where no child goes to bed afraid, hungry, or convinced they don’t matter.
I’d love to see peace become more common than outrage.
But if I’m being honest, the thing I’d most love to see is what happens long after I’m gone.
I’d love to know if the words I wrote mattered.
If a book helped someone stay.
If a blog post made a lonely person feel less alone.
If a quiet conversation gave someone the courage to keep going.
If the small acts of kindness we scatter throughout our lives really do keep traveling after we’re gone.
I probably won’t live long enough to witness most of that.
But maybe that’s the point.
Some seeds are planted for shade we’ll never sit under.
And that’s okay.
Sometimes the future isn’t something we’re meant to see.
Sometimes it’s something we’re meant to help build.
What a beautiful and deeply moving reflection. Your words go far beyond imagining the future—they speak to the legacy of compassion, kindness, and human connection.
I was particularly touched by the thought that the greatest future we may never witness is the one shaped by the lives we touch today. The image of planting seeds for shade we will never sit under is both humbling and inspiring. It reminds us that meaning is not always found in seeing the results of our efforts, but in having the faith to contribute anyway.
